At Soria’s City Council, we want to inspire the whole community and lead by example. To that end, we have carried out great efforts to fulfil the commitments made at the Covenant of Mayors of March 2013. Soria set out to reduce emissions by at least 20% by 2020, compared to 2012. To achieve this, a Reference Emissions Inventory (REI) and a Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) were established. As a result, efforts such as connecting seven municipal buildings to district heating were undertaken. In 2016, audits carried out at educational centres ‘Las Pedrizas’ and ‘Fuente del Rey’ showed that a reduction of 1,347 tons in emissions had been achieved. Similarly, in 2017, a reduction of 839 tons in emissions was registered while analysing the Public Market and ‘La Juventud’ Sports Centre. In 2018, the target had been to reduce 952 tons in emissions, and the places audited were the City Town Hall and the ‘Audiencia’ Cultural Centre. In conclusion, the efforts undertaken all proved to be successful.
Making Soria one of the capitals in sustainability will only be possible if this goal is at the core of all municipal projects and activities. Let us lead by example and spread the enthusiasm.
As the driving force behind this initiative, Soria’s City Council must begin the transformation from within. Injecting sustainability in the DNA of Council members should be a further objective of this Roadmap.
To that end, we must work to strengthen commitments and promote a cooperative scheme that allows employees to invest in the shared vision of ‘Soria 2030’.
We will continue carrying out initiatives such as energy saving programmes, investing renewable energy and the electrification of transport, and providing incentives for the sustainable mobility of City Council employees. Additionally, we will taking environmental steps such as creating vegetable gardens in green spaces, incorporating ecological public procurement, and promoting strategic alliances to achieve and improve sustainability, as well as reducing waste, among others. All of these initiatives will constitute our top priorities in the upcoming months of governance.
